Sustainability is more than a color.

There’s a lot of talk about “sustainability” and “going green” these days. But what does that really mean? In essence, sustainability is acting in economically viable, environmentally sound and socially responsible ways. It requires thoughtful management and integration of all three aspects.

  • Economic viability means remaining profitable and recycling dollars made back into the region by using local and regional vendors and providing jobs.
  • Environmental soundness refers to maintaining and enhancing things we value in our physical surroundings, such as clean water and air; and protecting wildlife and renewable resources such as timber, fish and solar energy, and preserving history and culture.
  • Social responsibility has to do with strengthening families and community by supporting local, regional and domestic sourcing and manufacturing.

Together these three “pillars” of sustainability are a blueprint for supporting life in any given ecosystem, and on the planet in general.
