Special Instructions:
1: In this pattern, the fleece is inserted into the knitting beginning at the heel
flap and across the underfoot portion and up to the toe closing. If you decide to add
fleece to the leg portion or the upper foot, in addition to the underfoot, you will
need extra fleece roving, and the foot width should be increased slightly to
accommodate the extra thickness.
2: Preparing the fleece lining – tear strips of fleece, about 1/8” (3 mm) in diameter.
Roll the strip between your hands briskly to make a tight roll of fiber
(see photo on page 3). The length of the fleece strips should be about the
same width of the under sock. Make as many fiber rolls as you’ll need to cover the
heel flap and under sock, about 90 rolls for a pair of men’s socks to fit a 10 1/2 shoe.
3: Turn completed socks to WS, thread a tapestry needle with one fleece roll.
Begin at the top of the heel flap and work across the heel flap (see photo on last
page). *Insert the tapestry needle under every 3rd or 4th purl stitch and pull
through gently so that fleece doesn’t pull apart. Check that fleece isn’t showing
through onto the RS. Repeat from * inserting a row of fleece about every 3 rows
or so, allowing a row or two of yarn to show between the fleece rows to provide
space for the fleece to flatten and eventually felt.
4: An optional method of inserting the fleece: As you knit the heel flap, hold a roll
of fleece the same way as a second yarn in two-handed Fair Isle knitting, weaving
the fleece in as you knit across the heel and underfoot.
